This book basically hasn't had a good cover since its initial release 100 years ago, which is a shame because Antonia is amazing. I wanted to play with the different aspects of her personality, the hard and the soft, so I chose to show her at work with a tool as she’s wont to be, and offset this with a very flowery design inspired by Czech folk patterns as a reference to Antonia’s Bohemian heritage.

This is a bit of a retelling of the Cinderella story, but with more crags in it.

Have you ever had a bad day? Perhaps an incident caused some unwelcome thoughts to bubble up, and in order to bury those thoughts deep in the catacombs of your mind, you took to the internet and binged on cute baby animals? Animals are so fucking cute. Who needs thoughts that make you stare into the meaning of your existence and the value of your time which ticks away every second as you read this? I don't. All I need are adorable kittens and bunnies. (Cute animal fact: A baby bunny is actually called a kitten and we are all going to die one day.)

Created during my summer 2015 residency at Industry Lab which culminated in a solo show, Cute Animal Facts Dot Com was inspired by our tendency to avoid thoughts that might actually be helpful to consider. The silhouettes of cute animals in pastels offset the message hidden in the negative space. Each painting is titled with a corresponding cute animal fact, for instance "Seahorses Travel While Holding Each Other's Tails" and "A Group of Bunnies Is Called a Fluffle."

A nod to both the restaurant and one character’s murder, the cast iron skillet is possibly the most important item in the story. It’s ubiquitous. Much like the women in the book, it is underestimated. The cover creates irony for readers: Those who haven’t read the book yet will see it and think, "Oh that’s nice, a skillet with pretty hand lettering, like on a cafe signboard." Those who’ve read the book will see it and think, "Oh that’s nice, a murder weapon with pretty hand lettering, like on a cafe signboard.

With all the focus on digital, sometimes it's nice to return to the simplicity of pencil on paper.
